BIOGRAPHY




Johannes Rydén was born in 1994 in Stockholm, Sweden. He is active as a freelance cellist in Sweden with orchestras, ensembles and as a chamber musician on modern cello and baroque cello.


Johannes studied 2013–2018 at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he obtained his Bachelor's degree and Master's degree (chamber music/soloist) with Ola Karlsson as his teacher.

A strong interest and curiosity for early music led him to study the baroque cello at KMH (Royal College of Music, Stockholm) for Mime Yamahiro Brinkmann and he has also studied in Utrecht for Viola de Hoog.


He has participated in courses and festivals in Sweden and abroad; Aurora Festival (Vänersborg, Sweden), Amsterdam Conservatory Summer School of Early Music, Voksenåsen Masterclasses in Oslo and Amsterdam Cello Biennale.

He has played in masterclasses for Torleif Thedeén, Mats Lidström, Hernik Brendstrup, Natalie Clein, Danjulo Ishizaka, Jakob Kullberg, Peter Bruns, Mark Caudle and Job Ter Haar. In chamber music, he has played for the Utrecht String Quartet, Quiroga Quartet, Frans Helmersson and Iris Juda.


Johannes regularly substitutes with orchestras and ensembles around Sweden. With his own ensemble, Ensemble Barabarock, he has played concerts all around Sweden since the start in 2021. He is also a member of SoFo Chamber Orchestra.

Together with the accordionist Milan Rehak, he has Duo Rydén&Rehak. They met in 2015 at the Academy of Music in Stockholm and have been performing regularly ever since. In 2019, they participated in the final of the chamber music competition Ung och Lovande (Young and Promising) in Västerås as one of five ensembles.

He has received scholarships from the Royal Academy of Music, the Association for Early Music in Sweden, the Vadstena Academy, the INFINITY Foundation and St. Johanneslogen St. Erik Jubilee Fund.

Johannes collaborates regularly with his brother, the dancer and choreographer Simon Rydén. Their latest work was selected as one of the finalists in the Goodmesh Concours in The Hague (Netherlands) in December 2022.
